The main reason is that Quicken is limited in functionality on the Mac and not supported at all on Ubuntu (Linux) which I use as my primary computer at home. I have to keep a copy of Windows around just to use Quicken, not something I want to continue.

I tried Quicken Online when it first came out. When I heard that Intuit was coming out with it, I was really hopeful. I use Intuit's Web Turbo Tax every year and find it extremely impressive. I expected the same quality for Quicken Online. Instead I found Quicken Online to be very limited in scope compared to Quicken on the desktop. It felt like a clunky, poorly designed version of Mint. It was missing the ability to create asset accounts to track cash, something that I find necessary. Also, even though Quicken online was a web application, it had many bugs. I wrote support about it and they told me that they don't support Firefox on Linux. That was the end for me - I instantly cancelled my trial membership. If you're going to offer a product on the web, I don't see any reason not to support Mac, Windows, and Linux. It's not that hard.

So, I continue my search for a Quicken replacement. I've considered Money Dance which is well-supported on all platforms, but ultimately I want a web-based service with the ability to manage transactions from mobile devices too. Every time I use cash to buy something, I want to be able to whip out my iPhone, launch an applicaiton or visit a mobile-oriented web site, enter that transaction, and forget about it. As it is now, I have to write down the transaction or save the receipt, then wait until I get home to enter in into Quicken.

I mentioned Mint because it completely web-based, its feature set seems to be improving rapidly, and they released a very well-written iPhone application. They just seem to get it.

If you have any suggestions as to how to address all my concerns using Quicken, I'd love to hear them. After all, I do have a lot of transaction history in Quicken that I'd hate to leave behind.

Hi Ken,This is Chelsea from Quicken. Which version of 2008 do you use?

I'm not sure if you've tried QuickenOnline.com yet, but it is a free, Web-based, forward-looking service. At this time, it won't give you the drill-down you've said you're seeking in a Web-based service, but it is coming from the same company that makes Quicken, something you've said you can't live without.

If you are willing to talk to me about the reasoning behind your proposal to switch brands, I'm open! If not, thank you so much again for mentioning us, and stay tuned as we continue to make Quicken Online the best it can be.

- Chelsea, Quicken Online

I think you're making a very good case for others ...

I think you're making a very good case for others to try cloud-based storage!

Itching to try it out myself - Jungle Disk might be irresistable.

Best.
Alain
