I usually leave the drive off though unless I am using it so I'm not too worried. It...I have that same Maxtor 300 GB external drive. It works really well, and I also use it to back up music. I use the software that came with it. Retrospect something or other. I made another external backup drive out of an old 80 GB hard drive and an enclosure I bought separately. It works well, but has a noisy fan. I don't have any of the networkable ones though.
